Part A

In "Ocean Noise," what can be inferred about how noise pollution affects the ability of animals to navigate?

It makes it difficult for animals to navigate areas close to the shore.

It is not a problem because most marine animals do not use sound to navigate.

It causes animals to have increased navigation abilities around shores.

It causes whales to have difficulty tracking sea lions through the ocean.

Question 2

Part B - Points depend on a correct response in Part A.

Which evidence from the text best supports the answer to Part A?

"Sound also plays an important role in the daily life of various ocean animals, many of which depend upon their sharp sound detection skills to survive."

"The stranding of whales and dolphins has been found to increase immediately after naval sonar maneuvers."

"This means that sounds in the oceans can travel for many, many miles in a short period of time."

"Sea lions are another type of animal that depends on sounds to communicate with other sea lions."

Even in such a bitter, unusual election, roughly half of eligible Americans probably won't vote by the end of Election Day. In recent elections, turnout has ranged from about 50% to 60% of the voting-age population.

But there is a simple change the US could make to boost turnout dramatically, something that has worked in at least 26 other democracies.

The government could make Americans vote.

9. Identify and define types of run-on sentences.

10. What should you include in an effective body paragraph for an argumentative essay?

11. What are the characteristics of an effective call to action?

Answers

Answer:

1: A clear, persuasive thesis statement in the introduction paragraph. Body paragraphs that use evidence and explanations to support the thesis statement. A paragraph addressing opposing positions on the topic—when appropriate. A conclusion that gives the audience something meaningful to think about.

2: Evidence serves as support for the reasons offered and helps compel audiences to accept claims. Evidence comes in different sorts, and it tends to vary from one academic field or subject of argument to another.

3: The definition of ineffective is something or someone that does not succeed at accomplishing or moving towards a goal. When you make an effort to clean up but you do not end up actually cleaning anything at all, this is an example of an effort that would be described as ineffective.

4: There are three main types of sentence fragments: sentences missing a subject, sentences missing a verb, and subordinate clause fragments.

5:

-Restate your topic and why it is important,

-Restate your thesis/claim,

-Address opposing viewpoints and explain why readers should align with your position,

-Call for action or overview future research possibilities.

6: Here are five essential steps to follow when building an argument:

-Introduce the problem. Introduce the problem or issue at the center of your argument.

-Present your claim. .

-Support your claim.

-Acknowledge the opposing side of the argument.

-Restate your claim.

7:

-What do you do well? ·

-What do your friends say you do well? ·

- If you could do or be anything, what would you do or be?

8: The heavy lifting of most writing comes in the form of supporting details. Support allows a claim to be verified, proven, and convincing to an audience.

9: Run-on sentences can be divided into two types. The first occurs when a writer puts no mark of punctuation and no coordinating conjunction between independent clauses. The second is called a comma splice, which occurs when two or more independent clauses are joined by just a comma and no coordinating conjunction.

10: Body paragraphs.

A typical argumentative essay comprises three or more paragraphs that explain the reasons why you support your thesis. Each body paragraph should cover a different idea or piece of evidence and contain a topic sentence that clearly and concisely explains why the reader should agree with your position.

11:

-They're compelling. The most important aspect of your CTA button is the copy.

-They're action-oriented.

-They speak in the first person.

-They create a sense of urgency.

-They include extra information (if necessary) .

-They're impossible to miss.

-They use a contrasting color.

Explanation:

Answer: 1. use evidence and explanations to support the thesis statement.

2.They address important, relevant problems. Readers will think that the claim might help them address a problem they care about.

3. When you make an effort to clean up but you do not end up actually cleaning anything at all

4. sentences missing a subject, sentences missing a verb, and subordinate clause fragments.

5. restate your thesis, summarize the key supporting ideas you discussed throughout the work, and offer your final impression on the central idea.

The Persistent Gardener
It was Jilly's last day in the green house. Summer was coming to an end and so was the growing season. School would be starting next week and the fall plants were well enough along to allow Mrs. T. to manage the greenhouses herself. As Jilly worked the plants for the last time, she tried to focus on the new school year instead of the details of the greenhouse. It had been a hard, hot summer, but Jilly was not ready for it to be over.

Jilly moved down the tables, tucking a stray hair behind her ear with a gloved and already dirty hand. She'd repotted the last of the rosemary plants and mixed a new batch of potting soil already. Mrs. T. now had enough potting soil to last her through September. Jilly looked at a couple of maiden-hair ferns that were beginning to yellow in their small pots. She loved their lacey fronds and had grown concerned over the last few days that they needed repotting or a boost of fertilizer. She had also worried that she would continue to find chores that needed doing, plants that needed help, right up until the minute she left today. She hated unfinished things. She hated details not being tended to.

The sun had been above the trees and blasting the greenhouse for a good hour now. Jilly listened for the familiar whirr of the automatic vents opening. When the greenhouse reached a certain temperature, the vents would open automatically. The vents would have a cooling effect for an hour or so, and then no amount of breeze would put a dent in the heat. Mrs. T. often claimed Jilly must be part reptile as she was able to work longer in the greenhouse than anyone else. The heat just didn't bother her. In fact, Jilly often looked forward to the warmth of the greenhouse and feeling the heat seep into her bones. It felt good to her, but she understood others who found it hard to breathe in 100 degree temperatures.

Jilly heard the greenhouse door bang, and looked up from her ferns to see Mrs. T. walking down the aisle with a tray of young plants. Mums, Jilly supposed, the flowers everyone wants for fall. She had helped Mrs. T. take cuttings and plant the small stems in new pots. They were doing nicely from the look of things.

"We will keep these in here for now," said Mrs. T. "They are getting too much rain outside."

It had been a rainy couple of days. Jilly knew, as well as anyone, that overwatering could kill potted plants quickly.

"Do you remember when I overwatered those mint plants?" Jilly asked Mrs. T.

"I used to think no one could kill a mint plant," Mrs. T. said, laughing.

"Well I am full of surprises, apparently," Jilly replied. Jilly remembered the sad green plants that just kept looking more and more wilted no matter how much water she gave them. It was a beginner's mistake, and Jilly had been so embarrassed for making it.

"That you are," replied Mrs. T. "But I know you learned a lesson you won't ever forget."

"Of course. Herbs like their roots damp, not flooded," Jilly answered.

"Well that is not the lesson I was thinking of," Mrs. T. said.

Jilly wondered for a minute what the lesson could be. She straightened the rows of geraniums in front of her, picking up one or two to check for aphids under the leaves. It had been a summer full of lessons, some especially hard for a girl who thought she knew a lot about plants. She breathed deeply the warm, humid air. She hated the cooped up feeling of air conditioned air, the feeling of being cut off from the sun. She knew school and the library would offer only these uncomfortable feelings and little time to spend in the sun or with plants. She had come to understand this over the summer-her need to be around growing things was huge.

"I'm not sure, Mrs. T." she said, "I've learned so much this summer. I couldn't possibly say what you are thinking."

"You did learn many lessons, Jilly. You knew so much when you started. You've gone farther than any other assistants I've had. I will miss you."

"And I will miss you," Jilly replied. "Thank you for the opportunity and the job." Jilly watched Mrs. T. put the tray of mums down on the center row of tables. Wearing her familiar brown apron, Mrs. T. looked just as she had on Jilly's first day.

"My pleasure, of course, dear," Mrs. T. replied. "My hope for you, as for all my assistants over the years, is that you will learn as much about yourself as you do about growing plants."

Recalling her thoughts all morning, about what she enjoyed about her summer job, Jilly realized she knew much more than just how to not drown the mint.

Which line from the text best describes how Jilly feels about her job? (5 points)

a
It had been a hard, hot summer, but Jilly was not ready for it to be over.

Answers

Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of The Hobbit, is one of a race of creatures about half the size of humans, beardless and with hairy feet. He lives in an unspecified time that is at once ancient and also very like the Victorian age, with its cozy domestic routines. Like most hobbits, Bilbo is fond of the comforts of home and hearth: He loves good, simple food in abundance, and he loves his pipe and well-furnished hobbit-hole. The book opens, in fact, with Bilbo's smoking a pipe one morning just outside his home; shortly afterward, he finds himself serving high tea — including coffee, cakes, scones, jam, tart, and pies — to thirteen dwarves. Memories of this kind of plain English food follow Bilbo throughout his hardships on his journey, when he is often hungry, and represent what home means to him. Bilbo is also fastidious: He does not like the mess the dwarves create in his home and, although he has been invited by Gandalf to join a dramatic adventure, in Chapter 2 he almost returns home because he has forgotten his handkerchiefs and his pipe.

Bilbo is called upon to do more than he imagines himself capable of. He does not like to travel, preferring the safety of his hobbit-hole, but he has inherited a streak of adventurousness from his mother's side, the Tooks. His adventurous Took side and his comfort-loving Baggins side are in conflict throughout much of the story. For the first half of the book, he is often hapless and rather cowardly. He begins by falling into a fit when he feels prevailed upon to join Gandalf and the dwarves, and later he must be carried by Dori when they are escaping the Goblins. In the face of difficulties, he is often afraid and constantly daydreams of bacon and eggs and wishes himself back home. In Chapter 2, he is caught trying to pickpocket the trolls.
