American poet Emma Lazarus wrote a sonnet titled "The New Colossus" (1849–1887). In order to raise funds for the creation of a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty, she wrote the poem in 1883. (Liberty Enlightening the World).  The poem was installed inside the pedestal's lower level on a bronze plaque in 1903.

The "Art Loan Fund Exhibition in Aid of the Bartholdi Pedestal Fund for the Statue of Liberty" held an auction of literary and artistic works and accepted this poem as a donation in order to raise funds for the pedestal's construction.

William, a fundraiser, asked Lazarus for a donation. Maximillian Evarts She first objected, but author Constance Cary Harrison persuaded her that immigrants sailing into the harbor would find enormous meaning in the statue.
