The King’s Hawk
A Even the world’s greatest leaders sometimes learn things the hard way. Eight hundred years ago a powerful king named Genghis Khan ruled an empire that stretched from eastern Europe to the Sea of Japan and included all of China. His armies marched on China and Persia, and Khan was known as the greatest king since Alexander the Great.
B According to legend, one day Khan gathered some friends and servants and rode into the countryside to search for game. Everyone in the party had high hopes of bringing home enough meat for a great feast that night. In those days it was customary to bring a trained hawk along on hunting trips. On command, the hawk would leave its master’s wrist and fly high into the sky. Then, using its exceptional eyesight, the hawk would spot its prey and swoop down on it, so the hunters would know where to follow.
C On this trip the king had brought his favorite hawk. It was a hot summer day, and although the hunting party rode for hours, they had no luck finding game. At dusk they gave up and turned toward home. The king knew the area well, and while the hunting party took the fastest way home, the king rode off on his own between two large mountains, determined to have a successful hunt. In the valley, his hawk flew off.
D As the king rode farther, he became parched and started looking for a spring of water. His thirst was growing, but the hot summer had dried up all the brooks that usually ran by the path. Finally, he spotted a trickle of water running over the edge of a steep rock. Quickly, he jumped from his horse, taking a small silver cup from his bag. He held the cup under the trickle of water until there was enough to drink.
E However, as he raised the cup to his lips, there was a whooshing sound, and the cup was knocked from his hand to the ground. The king turned to see who could be responsible. Spotting his pet hawk, he wondered why the bird would do such a thing. Angrily, the king picked up the cup and again held it under the trickling water. This time he held the cup for just a few seconds before he began to raise it to his mouth. Just as the cup touched his lips, the hawk flew down again, rushed past the king, and again knocked the cup to the ground.
F The king was very angry now. Again he filled the cup, and again the hawk kept him from having even the smallest drink. “You awful bird!” the king shouted. “If you were near me I would kill you in an instant!” As the king filled the cup for the fourth time, he spoke to the hawk. “Now, you arrogant hawk, I warn you. If you value your life, let me drink.” As he spoke, he held his sword ready. Again the bird flew down, knocking the cup from the king’s hand; but this time, the king was ready. His sword flashed and the bird fell. The hawk dropped at his master’s feet and died quickly.
G “That will teach you,” said the king. Then Genghis Khan turned and looked for the cup, but it was nowhere to be found. “I will drink now anyway,” he said, and started climbing the steep rock toward the source of the water. It was a long climb, and the king’s thirst grew and grew.
H Finally, he reached the top and could see the water. As he walked closer, he could see something in the water. With one more step the king could see now that the huge thing was a dead snake, one of the most poisonous in his entire kingdom.
I Now, the king stopped walking. He forgot his thirst, and his heart ached as he thought dismally of the dead hawk he had left lying on the ground below. He dropped his head and said, “You were a true friend, Sir Hawk. You saved my life, and yet in anger I killed you. I will honor your memory and never forget the lesson you taught me.”

Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat: Address to Parliament
Winston Churchill
May 13, 1940
[During World War II]
INTRODUCTION 1 Mister Speaker, on Friday evening last I received His Majesty's commission to form a new Administration. It was the evident wish and will of Parliament and the nation that this should be conceived on the broadest possible basis and that it should include all parties, both those who supported the late Government and also the parties of the Opposition. I have completed the most important part of this task. A War Cabinet has been formed of five Members, representing, with the Liberal Opposition, the unity of the nation.
2 The three party Leaders have agreed to serve, either in the War Cabinet or in high executive office. The three Fighting Services have been filled. It was necessary that this should be done in one single day, on account of the extreme urgency and rigor of events. A number of other key positions were filled yesterday, and I am submitting a further list to His Majesty tonight. I hope to complete the appointment of the principal Ministers during tomorrow. The appointment of the other Ministers usually takes a little longer, but I trust that when Parliament meets again, this part of my task will be completed, and that the administration will be complete in all respects.
3 Sir, I considered it in the public interest to suggest that the House should be summoned to meet today. Mr. Speaker agreed, and took the necessary steps, in accordance with the powers conferred upon him by the Resolution of the House. At the end of the proceedings today, the Adjournment of the House will be proposed until Tuesday, the 21st of May, with, of course, provision for earlier meeting, if need be. The business to be considered during that week will be notified to Members at the earliest opportunity. I now invite the House, by the Resolution which stands in my name, to record its approval of the steps taken and to declare its confidence in the new Government.
CLOSING 4 We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: victory; victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Let that be realized; no survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge and impulse of the ages, that mankind will move forward towards its goal. But I take up my task with buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. At this time I feel entitled to claim the aid of all, and I say, "Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength."

B) the author has the goal of preparing the British for an invasion, and he plans on answering everyone's questions after the speech so that they feel better.
C) the author has the goal of preparing the British for an invasion, and he is trying to create a feeling of insecurity by placing the pressure of preparing for the invasion on the people.
D) the author has the goal of preparing the British for an invasion, and he is trying to create a feeling of security by explaining the pressure of preparing for the invasion to the people.
E) the author has the goal of preparing the British for an invasion, and he wants to create a feeling of reassurance that the leaders have a policy and a direct aim for winning in the minds of the people.

5.(11.07 MC) It takes a total of 3 hours to wash every window on a building. There are 30 windows. How many minutes does it take to wash just one window?(
Answer:
6 minutes
Explanation:
Since the answer most certainly would be some number of MINUTES, I changed "3 hours" to minutes. (60 min. in an hour x 3 hrs. = 180 minutes.)
Then, set up the equation:
180 min. x min.
-------------- = --------------
30 windows 1 window
30x = 180
x = 6
---------------------------------------------------------------
OR ...... you could have simply thought that 30 windows in 3 hours means the same as 10 windows in 1 hour. (30 divided by 3).
Then, that means 10 windows in 60 minutes, which is, 6 minutes. (60 divided by 10.)

a. Angela speaks English.
B. He is feeling a dog.
C. Johan has planted a tree.
D. Anu can speak Chinese.
Answer:
b. Have you ever been bitten by a dog?
Explanation:
The ground rules to change active voice in passive voice are:
The places of subject and object are interchanged.
3rd form of the verb (past participle) is always used as the main verb in the passive voice. This applies to all tenses.
The word 'by' is generally used before the subject.
The given sentence is an example of the present perfect tense. The formula to convert a present perfect tense sentence in passive voice is an object of the active sentence + has/have +been + past participle form of the verb + by + subject of the active sentence.
Thus, the passive voice for the given sentence - Have you ever been bitten by a dog?

Dear Susan,
I hope you are doing well. I had a nice experience at the zoo some days ago, and I want to tell you all about it.
Last Monday, my classmates and I went to the zoo. It was an amazing trip since we learned about different animals and their habitats. We saw monkeys, giraffes, elephants, and even snakes. It was a great trip because I have never seen any of those animals in person.
We had to take notes of all the different animals that we saw and what the guide said. At the end of the trip, our teacher asked us questions to check what we learned and asked us to choose one animal and write in detail about it.
Have you been on any school trips lately? If so, I would love to hear how it was. Hope to see you soon.
All the best,
Kelly
Explanation:
In this letter, we have to tell our friend about a school trip. In the first paragraph, we ask our friend how she is doing and introduce the topic of the letter. In the next paragraph, we describe what the teacher asked us to do after the visit to check our knowledge. Finally, we ask the person about her/his experience and say our goodbyes.

The dream in lines 11-20 is a miniature allegory that has several analogies to the world in which the boys live. the "angel who had a bright key /and … open'd the coffins and set them all free" (line 13-14) represents __________.
Answer:
A messenger from God who sets the boys free with the key of death and blissful life in heaven.
Explanation:
William Blake's poem "The Chimney Sweeper" from his "Songs of Innocence" talks about the issue of child labor. The main focus of the poem is a young chimney sweeper who had a dream about an angel and how that gave him the confidence to continue his 'work'.
The lines "And by came an Angel who had a bright key, And he opened the coffins & set them all free;" are from the 4th stanza. The young chimney sweeper, Tom, had seen an angel in his dream. And seeing that the angel brought a key to "set them all free" would help Tom happily continue working despite the gravity of being a chimney sweeper.
The angel's appearance is significant for it represents a messenger from God who would set the boys free and give them a blissful life in heaven.
