Passage A–One way to enjoy a healthier lifestyle is to grow your own vegetables. That way, you know they are free from harmful chemicals. Where do you start if you want to grow your own healthy food? Start with the soil.

If this is your first adventure in gardening, start small. Choose plants that are easy to tend and that will grow well in the soil you have. Deciding what to grow is the first step and it will help decide how big of a garden you want. Not all plants grow in the same way. You have to consider which plants prefer sunlight and which prefer shade. This will help with picking the best spot for your garden.

Once you have decided where you will plant your garden, you can move on to planning your garden's layout. You don't want your tall plants growing next to the shorter ones and blocking out the sun. You also want to make sure there is enough room between the rows to allow for weeding. Proper planning makes planting a breeze.

Passage B–It is more expensive to build a green roof than it is to lay asphalt or shingles on a roof, but the trend is growing. The basic green roof requires a frame, waterproof membrane, gravel for drainage, fibrous material to retain moisture, soil for planting, and a barrier that prevents roots from penetrating the building.

Green roofs started in Europe and are now gaining a strong foothold in the United States. The largest green roof in New York City is built on the roof of a processing and distribution facility. It is actually the biggest green roof in the country. Being in New York, it has faced snow, rain, freezing, and thawing. It has survived it all.

The city of Chicago, Illinois, now has more green roofs than any other U.S. city. There are 7 million square feet of green roofs planted across the city. Toronto, Canada, is the first city in the western hemisphere to mandate green roofs on all new tall buildings. Green roofs are beneficial, not only to the environment, but also to the cities that build them. A recent study in Toronto suggested that if 75 percent of the flat roofs were greened, the city could save $37 million a year on storm water management and energy bills.

Too Fast

Batnik’s father was a great inventor. He had created many things that made people’s lives easier. One of his inventions was a car that could operate on both water and land; this car was Batnik’s favorite. On water, it could float and travel at speeds up to 80 miles per hour. But on land, it could travel at speeds over 200 miles per hour. Batnik’s father had created this special car to help people from their island get to the mainland and other islands faster. When Batnik's father was a boy, the only method of travel from one island to another was by ferry, and the trip often took hours. People who were sick and needed medical help from the mainland would have to endure the long crossing or not go at all because of delays. Batnik’s father loved his homeland and wanted to ease the burden on the people, so he created the water car.

When he showed the car to Batnik, Batnik’s father warned Batnik that the car should not be driven at the maximum speed on land or water because the engine could burst into flame. One day when his father was away, Batnik decided that he wanted to show the car to his friends. He drove it on the water, at first going only half the possible speed. Then, as his excitement grew, he increased his speed on the water and was nearing maximum speed. When he reached the land, he continued to accelerate. His exhilaration grew. Like the mythological Greek boy Icarus, who flew too close to the sun, Batnik forgot his father’s warning and pushed the gas pedal to the floor. When the car exceeded 200 miles per hour, it burst into flames.

What do these animals have in common? They're hybrids. Sometimes hybrids happen naturally in the wild, but usually, hybrids are the result of humans selectively breeding animals.

Grolar bears and pizzlies are the result of crossing polar bears and grizzly bears. These hybrids were first seen in zoos, as the bears' natural habitats did not normally overlap. Recently, these hybrids have started appearing in the wild. Due to climate change, the bears' once-separate habitats are beginning to overlap. Bigger and more aggressive than their parents, grolar bears and pizzlies could pose a risk to natural habitats and humans.

Wolfdogs are, as their name suggests, the result of crossing a wolf with a domestic dog. Bred for the pet trade, these hybrids do not often happen in the wild. Wolfdogs do not make good pets, however, as they can be destructive and aggressive. Many states have outlawed keeping wolfdogs because they can pose a danger to people.

Savannah cats are another example of human-made hybrids that were developed to be pets. Savannahs are the result of crossing a small wildcat called a serval with a domestic housecat. They look like miniature versions of the wildcat, which is why many people like keeping them as pets. Like the wolfdog, however, Savannahs do not make ideal house pets. They can be destructive, and usually, they keep the wild nature of the serval.

There are many more examples of human-made hybrid animals. Some hybrids, such as the mule, have been helpful to humans. Unfortunately, others, like the wolfdog or Savannah cat, should not have been made in the first place.
